Charlestown voters rejected a proposal to be annexed by Boston.

The Massachusetts legislature had conditional approve annexation, subject to approval by Charlestown residents. Former Mayor Josiah Quincy Jr. also opposed the move, and wrote a pamphlet in which he argued that the idea of large cities, “is as little reconcilable with the spirit of republicanism as it is with the predominancy of sound principle.”
